Inspired by the incredible Ancient Egypt exhibit currently on display at the Hong Kong Palace Museum, we are launching " Egyptian Canopic Jars for Modern Treasures" A 7-Week Ceramics Adventure.

Starting the first week of March, your child will embark on a journey from clay to masterpiece. They will learn real hand-building techniques (coils and slabs!) to construct their very own set of Canopic Jars—the sacred vessels guarded by the sons of Horus.

Over the 7 weeks, they will:

Sculpt the bodies of theri unique jars.

Design the animal guardian lids (think falcons, jackals, or theri favorit animal!).

Carve secret hieroglyphic messages into the clay.

Glaze their masterpieces to bring them to life.

This isn't just an art class; it's a hands-on history lesson where they get to make a treasure to keep forever.

Hand Building Cheat Sheet: PORT 🏺

Struggling to remember the steps for successful hand building pottery? I created a simple acronym to help my students: PORT.

Just like sailing into port, this will guide your clay building process to a safe finish!

P - Prepare
Prepare your clay by wedging thoroughly to remove air bubbles and ensure even consistency. Prepare your workspace with tools, water, and a clean surface.

O - Operate
Operate with intention! This is the main building phase—forming slabs, coiling, pinching, and joining. Score and slip all connections well.

R - Reinforce
Reinforce your joins and structures. Blend seams gently, add support for overhangs, and compress the clay to strengthen weak points.

T - Thickness
Check thickness consistently! Aim for even walls (generally ~1/4 inch) to ensure even drying and prevent cracking or exploding in the kiln.
